Houston's pollen, humidity, and hard water leave a film on your panels that quietly drains efficiency month after month. Here's what's happening — and why the water we use to clean them matters as much as the cleaning itself.
Solar panels are one of the best investments a Houston homeowner can make — but they only perform at their rated capacity when they're clean. Studies from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory estimate that soiling — dust, pollen, bird droppings, and atmospheric grime — can reduce panel output by 15 to 25 percent under typical conditions. In Houston, where oak pollen season is aggressive and humidity keeps everything sticky, that number can climb higher.
The frustrating part is that the loss is invisible. Your panels look fine from the ground. The inverter is still showing output. But you're running at 80 cents on the dollar — or less — and your electric bill is quietly higher than it should be every single month.
Most solar installers recommend cleaning panels every 6 to 12 months depending on your environment. In Houston, with our pollen load and humidity, we lean toward twice a year for most homes — once after spring pollen season, once heading into fall.
WHAT DIRTY PANELS ACTUALLY COST YOU
Here's where most DIY solar cleaning goes wrong. A homeowner grabs a garden hose, rinses the panels off, and figures the job is done. It isn't. In fact, depending on your water source, hosing down your panels with tap water can leave them in worse condition than before.
Houston's municipal water supply carries dissolved minerals — calcium, magnesium, silica — measured in parts per million (PPM). When that water hits a hot panel surface and evaporates, those minerals don't evaporate with it. They stay behind as a white, chalky residue that bonds to the glass. Over time, repeated tap water rinsing builds up a mineral film that actually blocks more light than the original dirt did.
The same pure water technology we use for window cleaning is exactly what solar panels need. Our 4-stage RO/DI filtration system strips the water down to sub-10 PPM — essentially mineral-free. When that water evaporates off your panels, it leaves nothing behind. No streaks, no mineral deposits, no film. Just clean glass.
We run every solar panel job through the same Tucker V2 water-fed pole system and 4-stage RO/DI filtration we use for window cleaning. The science is identical — pure water cleans better and leaves no residue. For solar panels, that means maximum light transmission restored after every cleaning.
Removes large particles — dirt, rust, debris — that would clog or damage the downstream filters.
Strips chlorine, chloramines, and organic compounds from the municipal supply.
Forces water through a semi-permeable membrane at pressure, rejecting up to 98% of dissolved solids.
Final ion exchange stage. Brings TDS to sub-10 PPM — the threshold where water leaves zero residue on any surface.
We check TDS levels before every job. If the output isn't sub-10 PPM, we don't start. That's the standard we hold ourselves to on every window and every panel we touch.
High-pressure water can force moisture into panel junction boxes, crack tempered glass, and void manufacturer warranties. Most solar panel warranties explicitly exclude damage caused by pressure washing. We never use high pressure on panels — period.
Our process is soft wash only — low pressure, pure water, and a soft brush head on the water-fed pole. The brush agitates the surface to break up pollen and grime while the pure water rinses it away cleanly. No chemicals, no high pressure, no risk to your equipment or your warranty.
We also work from the ground whenever possible using our extended water-fed poles. No boots on your roof, no risk of foot traffic damage to panels or roofing material.
The Bottom Line
"Clean panels pay for the cleaning. Dirty panels just pay the electric company."
Solar panel cleaning is priced by panel count. Most residential systems in Houston run $150–$350 depending on size and roof access. We'll give you an exact number before we start.
